At seventeen
he joined
the Air
Force, again
always
balancing
pursuit of

with worldly
experience.
At the age
of 20 he
hitchhiked
about the
country for
a year or
so, and then
re-enlisted
in the
military.
After two
years as an
infantry
paratrooper,
Paz became
one of the
first
anti-war
protesters
during the
build up of
the Vietnam
War.
He spent a
year in
military
prison,
which he and
a select
group of
other
inmates used
as a kind of
monastery
for the
pursuit of
significant
knowledge.
From there,
after
establishing
a career, at
the age of
29, he
walked away
from a life
of lucrative
success in
the physical
world, to
once again
seek an
existence on
the edge,
blending
Zorba the
Greek
adventure
with
Socratic
questioning
of all
things. His
journey
entailed
years of
hard road
travel,
working at
every kind
of labor, a
year here, a
semester
there at
varied
colleges and
universities,
shamanistic
explorations
with drugs,
plants and
fungi, and
countless
sunup to
sunset days
in libraries
great and
small over
half the
earth,
deeply
delving into
the quest
for truth
and wisdom.
Paz first
learned
meditation
from the
direct
tutelage of
Zen Master
Shunryo
Suzuki, and
over the
past thirty
years merged
Zen
teachings
with Hatha
and Jana
Yoga, the
psychological
insights of
Carl Jung,
and the
mental and
spiritual
disciplines
of Aurobindo
and
Gurdjieff.
This rich
background
has given
him the
ability to
transfer
scholarly
and esoteric
spiritual
text into
comprehensible
terms for
the layman.

Noon EDT Despite her apparent success, she still had a deep longing for spiritual fulfillment, and prayed for a teacher. In 1990 she met with Poonja popularly known as Papaji, a disciple of Ramana Maharshi, through Andrew Cohen, a former student of Papaji In this encounter, she says, the fulfillment she had sought was revealed to her. Papaji gave her the name "Gangaji," after the river Ganga (Ganges), and sent her back to America to teach.
Gangaji has described contracting an
illness and high fever while in India, which
preceded her experience of realization.

Haunted by the
memory of this event, Cohen abandoned his ambition to become a
jazz drummer and began a quest to recapture this experience.
Studying martial arts, then Kriya Yoga, then Buddhism from ages
22 to 30, Cohen eventually met the Indian mystic H. W. L. Poonja
in 1986. After spending only two weeks with Poonja, having what
he claimed was a “deep spiritual awakening,” Cohen, with the
initial encouragement of Poonja, began teaching, Later a
personal disagreement created a split between the two.
In 1988, Cohen founded
EnlightenNext, a nonprofit educational and spiritual network
committed to creating a new global culture. In addition to small
groups of students located in various parts of the world,
EnlightenNext has public centers in New York, Boston,
London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris, Copenhagen, Tel
Aviv, and Rishikesh, India. The main center for EnlightenNext is
a 220-acre (890,000 m²) retreat venue in Lenox, Massachusetts,
where Cohen and his largest body of students currently reside. Shortly after
he began teaching, Cohen began to meet with other spiritual
teachers in order to share his experience and engage in dialogue
about the nature of spiritual enlightenment. In 1991, he founded
the magazine What Is Enlightenment?, in order to share
and further this investigation. As editor in chief of WIE,
he believes that "it is on our shoulders to create the future,"
and sees the magazine and its associated programs as popular
forums for dialogue and inquiry regarding the meaning of
spiritual life in contemporary society.
