New World Record for Highest Jump
from
World's Tallest building in Dubai
from the London Telegraph -
Omar
Al Hegelan and Nasser Al Neyadi from the Emirates Aviation Society,
were given permission to do the jump on Tuesday, a day after the
building was officially opened with a lavish firework display.
They
jumped 672 meter’s or 2,204 feet and plummeted to the desert floor
at a speed of 136 mph, it took over one and a half minutes for the
jumpers to reach the ground.
Mr.
Al Neyadi, who holds the world record for the first ever Mount
Everest sky dive, said that the jump was "the best experience ever."
He added: "When we were at the top of the building I was thinking
'this is crazy'.
"I
was a little nervous but I wanted to jump from the highest tower in
the world to record an achievement for my family and for my
country."
The
tower cost $1.5 billion to build and was named after Sheikh Khalifa
bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the ruler of the neighboring emirate of Abu
Dhabi, and president of the United Arab Emirates.
He
and his brothers personally intervened last month to lend Dubai £6
billion to pay off the pressing debts of one of Dubai's biggest
state-owned companies. The
Burj Khalifa measures a staggering 2,717 feet.
Costa Rica Happiest Country in the
World
from World News Network
--
Costa
Rica is one of the very few countries to have abolished its army,
and it’s also arguably the happiest nation on earth.
There are
several ways of measuring happiness in countries, all inexact, but
this pearl of Central America does stunningly well by whatever
system is used. For example, the
World Database of Happiness, compiled by a Dutch sociologist on
the basis of answers to surveys by Gallup and others, lists Costa
Rica in the top spot out of 148 nations.
Costa Ricans,
asked to rate their own happiness on a 10-point scale, average 8.5.
Denmark is next at 8.3, the United States ranks 20th at 7.4 and Togo
and Tanzania bring up the caboose at 2.6.
Scholars also
calculate happiness by determining “happy life years.” This figure
results from merging average self-reported happiness, as above, with
life expectancy. Using this system, Costa Rica again easily tops the
list. The United States is 19th. Another approach is the “happy
planet index,” devised by the
New Economics Foundation. This combines happiness and longevity
but adjusts for environmental impact — such as the carbon that
countries spew.
Here again,
Costa Rica wins the day, for achieving contentment and longevity in
an environmentally sustainable way. The United States ranks 114th
(because of its huge ecological footprint), and Zimbabwe is last.
What sets Costa
Rica apart is its remarkable decision in 1949 to dissolve its armed
forces and invest instead in education. Increased schooling created
a more stable society, less prone to the conflicts that have raged
elsewhere in Central America. Education also boosted the economy,
enabling the country to become a major exporter of computer chips
and improving English-language skills so as to attract American
eco-tourists.
Costa Rica has
done an unusually good job preserving nature, and it’s surely easier
to be happy while basking in sunshine and greenery than while
shivering up north and suffering “nature deficit disorder.”
Costa Rica is
an ecological pioneer, introducing a carbon tax in 1997. The
Environmental Performance Index, a collaboration of Yale and
Columbia Universities, ranks Costa Rica at No. 5 in the world, the
best outside Europe.
Fatties Banned from Dating Website
from WCBS, 880 AM, New York City --
Is
it a simple case of out-of-control elitism, or is it just the right
thing to do? The dating service BeautifulPople.com has dumped
thousands of members. The reason? Because they're too fat. Log on
to the dating Web site
BeautifulPeople.com and you won't find any ugly people. Now,
according to the site's owners, you won't find any fat ones either.
"We especially noticed that from Thanksgiving - all the way through
New Year, members had been gaining weight and sort of letting
themselves go," managing director Genevieve Maylam said.
So the site dumped 5,000 subscribers who, they say, overindulged.
The Web site says it received complaints from members that there
were too many "fatties" roaming around, and not enough beauties.
"I just think that's horrible, it's horrible," TriBeCa resident
Tobey Hayduk said.
Those members who didn't meet the beauty benchmark received an
e-mail explaining that they had been expelled because of their extra
pounds. The message also included some tips on working out, and an
invitation to reapply when they slimmed down.
Lovers Cause Security Breach at
Newark International Airport
from All Headline News --
A
licentious couple breached security at Newark Liberty International
Airport after trying to sneak in a few more goodbye kisses,
according to reports. Reports said videotape footage shows a man and
woman kissing outside a checkpoint.
After the woman passes through the secured area, she holds up a
rope, permitting the man follow her as they walked hand-in-hand
towards the boarding gates, reports said. According to reports,
there was no TSA agent monitoring the gate, allowing the breach in
security.
Airport officials reportedly said it is an outrage and they are
infuriated over how much time passed during the breach.
According to reports, United Flight 93, one of the airplanes
involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks was hijacked from the
Newark, New Jersey, airport. The plane crashed in Pennsylvania after
passengers attempted to regain control from hijackers, reports said.
