Make Believe Cigarettes Poison
from US News & World Report --
T esting of electronic
cigarettes, known as e-cigarettes, has shown that they contain
cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins, including a compound used
in antifreeze, U.S. health officials said Wednesday.
E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that contain cartridges
filled with nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. "The device
turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, into a vapor that is
inhaled," according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, the FDA's principal deputy commissioner, said
in a news conference Wednesday that "public health experts,
including the World Health Organization, the U.S. and have expressed
concerns about the safety of these products and the risk.
Benjamin Westenberger, deputy director
of the analysis division at the Center for Drug Evaluation and
Research, part of the FDA, said that in one sample, analysis
detected diethylene glycol, an antifreeze component. In several
other samples, analysts found carcinogens, including nitrosamines,
Westenberger noted.
Although e-cigarettes are sold in the United States, they are
manufactured overseas, mostly in China.
Hate Group
Targets Werewolfs
from PR Log.com --
A hate group calling themselves the Society for Humanity, issued
their first official statement to the press last week. In it the
group outlined a mission statement that included goals such as the
destruction of all “Non Human Intelligent Species,” as well as
making provisions for the future of humanity. The document also
cited evidence that there was a build up of “unknown forces” that
might represent a clear and present metaphysical danger to the human
race.
The SFH is a relatively new organization that has been clouded in
secrecy. Their leader is a man named Dr. Leonard Malcolm Cross, a
former professor of chemistry and biology at the University of
Arizona. According to the missive released this morning the purpose
of the group is to oppose non-human intelligence in the battle for
control of the earth. In the brief statement the group claims that
there are a variety of creatures, most of which are generally
thought to be mythical, which actually exist and which prey on
humanity every single day. These creatures include such far fetched
species as vampires, werewolves, demons, dragons, and fairies.

Biofuel From Chicken Feathers and
Waste
from Science Daily --
Scientists in Nevada are reporting development of a new and
environmentally friendly process for producing biodiesel fuel from
"chicken feather meal," made from the 11 billion pounds of poultry
industry waste that accumulate annually in the United States alone.
In the study published in the current edition of Journal of
Agricultural and Food Chemistry a team of scientists from the
University of Nevada noted that chicken feather meal consists of
processed chicken feathers, blood, and innards that have been
processed at high temperatures with steam. Currently feather meal is
used as animal feed and fertilizer because of its high protein and
nitrogen content. With as much as 12 percent fat content, feather
meal has potential as an alternative, nonfood feedstock for the
production of biofuel, the report says.
The researchers describe a new process for extracting fat from
chicken feather meal using boiling water and processing it into
biodiesel. Given the amount of feather meal generated by the poultry
industry each year, they estimate this process could create 153
million gallons of biodiesel annually in the U.S. and 593 million
gallons worldwide. In addition, they note that removal of fat
content from feather meal results in both a higher-grade animal feed
and a better nitrogen source for fertilizer applications.
