Felonious B.O.
from
MSNBC --
It's
not just British amusement parks that are overly concerned with
smelly riders. Honolulu, Hawaii city council is considering an
ordinance against smelly bus riders. The law would make it
illegal to have 'odors that unreasonably disturb others or
interfere with their use of the public transit system'. This
would include personal odors, smelly clothing or belongings,
and/ or any animals with the rider. While not really a felony,
the offense would be punishable by up to a $500 fine and as much
as 6 months in jail. I guess the offender would get a shower and
clean clothes there.

The
Internet in a Contact Lens
From
Utne Reader--
Imagine a
contact lens that could connect you to the internet,
providing information about what you see in a format invisible
to other people. Or a contact lens, powered by radio frequencies
or solar power, that could monitor cholesterol or glucose levels
for diabetics. Babak A. Parviz, writing for IEEE Spectrum,
is already working on the technology, and has successfully
tested early versions on live rabbits. Parviz envisions the
contact lens turning into a platform like an iPhone,
where developers create new applications and inventions to
improve the human eye.
Do
High-fat Diets Make Us
Stupid And Lazy?
From Science Daily

Rats
fed a high-fat diet show a stark reduction in their physical
endurance and a decline in their cognitive ability after just
nine days, a study by Oxford University researchers has shown.
The research, funded by the British Heart Foundation and
published in the
FASEB Journal,
may have implications not only for those eating lots of high-fat
foods, but also athletes looking for the optimal diet for
training and patients with metabolic disorders.
"We found
that rats, when switched to a high-fat diet from their standard
low-fat feed, showed a surprisingly quick reduction in their
physical performance," says Dr Andrew Murray, who led the work
at Oxford University. "After just nine days, they were only able
to run 50 per cent as far on a treadmill as those that remained
on the low-fat feed."
High-fat diets prevalent in Western countries, are known to be
harmful in the long term,
and can lead to problems such as obesity, diabetes and heart
failure. They are also known to be associated with a decline in
cognitive ability over long time spans. But little attention has
been paid to the effect of high-fat diets in the short term. The
rats on the high-fat diet were also making mistakes sooner in
the maze task, suggesting that their cognitive abilities were
also being affected by their diet.
Spirituality Spot Found in Brain
from
LiveScience.com --
What
makes us feel spiritual? It could be the quieting of a small area in
our brains, a new study suggests.
The area in question — the
right parietal lobe — is responsible for defining "Me," said
researcher Brick Johnstone of Missouri University. It generates
self-criticism, he said, and guides us through physical and social
terrains by constantly updating our self-knowledge: my hand, my
cocktail, my witty conversation skills, my new
love interest People with less active Me-Definers are more
likely to lead
spiritual lives, reports the study in the current issue of the
journal Zygon.
The finding suggests that one core tenant of spiritual experience is
selflessness, said Johnstone, adding that he hopes the study "will
help people think about spirituality in more specific ways."
